How Overusing Antacids Affects Your Body and What You Can Do Instead.

Do you reach for an antacid every time you feel acidity? Hold on. It’s important to understand the real reason behind the discomfort first.
Why Does Acidity Happen?
Acidity is often triggered by certain foods and habits. Spicy and fatty meals, caffeine, alcohol, overeating, lack of physical activity, excess weight, smoking, and stress can all contribute to the problem. “To manage acidity effectively, lifestyle changes are necessary,” said Dr. Nandini Sarwate, chief nutritional advisor at Utopian Drinks.
Going to bed right after eating can also cause acid reflux, where stomach contents move up into the esophagus. This can lead to issues like heartburn, indigestion, constipation, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Are Antacids the Right Solution?
Antacids can provide quick relief, but they don’t solve the root problem, warned consultant dietitian and diabetes educator Kanika Malhotra. “They neutralize stomach acid for a short time, easing symptoms like heartburn and discomfort. However, they don’t fix the actual causes, which could be poor diet, stress, GERD, or peptic ulcers,” she explained.
Using antacids too often may cause side effects like rebound acidity and poor nutrient absorption. “Instead of just covering up the symptoms, it’s better to treat acidity at its source with lifestyle improvements, better eating habits, and, if needed, medications that lower acid production,” Malhotra added.
What Can Help Instead?
Eating at least 2 to 3 hours before bedtime can support digestion, suggested Dr. Priti Jain, a gastroenterologist at Apollo Spectra Delhi. “Healthy habits like taking a walk after meals can improve digestion and lower the chances of bloating, gas, and other stomach problems,” she advised.
Making small lifestyle adjustments can go a long way in reducing acidity. Instead of depending on antacids, focus on healthier food choices, staying active, and avoiding stress triggers.
