If Possible, Stay Away from Delhi for 6–8 Weeks, Says Top Lung Specialist

Delhi’s air has turned dangerous again. On October 30, the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was between 301 and 400 — in the “very poor” range. Hospitals are now seeing more people with breathing issues, cough, and chest pain.

Dr. Gopi Chand Khilnani, Chairman of PSRI Institute of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, said pollution levels have made many people sick in the past few days. He warned that breathing such dirty air can cause serious infections like pneumonia. His advice is simple — “If possible, stay away from Delhi for 6–8 weeks till the air gets better.”

Pollution’s Impact on Health

Dr. Khilnani said pollution harms not only the lungs but the entire body.

  • Children: Their lungs don’t grow properly, and many develop asthma.
  • Adults: Half of the cases of chronic lung disease (COPD) are now caused by air pollution, not smoking. Lung cancer among non-smokers is also increasing.

He said many patients who were fine earlier now need oxygen support or hospital care. A University of Chicago report found that pollution cuts the life span of Delhi residents by nearly 12 years.

Pollution also affects the heart, brain, kidneys, and immune system, leading to more heart attacks, strokes, and high blood pressure.

Who’s Getting Sick

After Diwali, two groups of patients are showing up more often — healthy people with throat irritation and chest pain, and asthma or COPD patients having severe attacks needing hospital admission.

Staying Safe

“Leaving Delhi is hard, but those with heart or lung problems should try to stay somewhere cleaner for a few weeks,” said Dr. Khilnani.

He also explained that small particles like PM2.5 go deep into the lungs, while gases like carbon monoxide quietly reduce oxygen in the blood.

Air purifiers can help if used correctly — keep them on, place them near you, and keep windows closed.

Delhi’s air is making people sick. If you can, give your lungs a break — step away from the city till the air clears up.
