Game of Thrones cast is as disappointed with season 8 as you are and they are saying it openly

Published

on

Like clockwork, a Game of Thrones cast member has publicly expressed their frustration with the final season immediately after a major turning point for their character. Conleth Hill, who played Lord Varys in the hit HBO show, has said that ‘the last couple seasons weren’t my favourite’.

Hill joins the likes of Lena Headey, Gwendoline Christie and several other actors who have, to varying degrees, agreed with fans that the final season of the show hasn’t lived up to expectations. Although season eight has received the highest ratings in the show’s history, it is also the worst-reviewed of the lot, with an aggregate score of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes. Episode five, The Bells, achieved the unenviable distinction of being the worst reviewed chapter in the show’s history.

Varys and Euron Greyjoy were killed in The Bells, and although Hill and Pilou Asbaek (who played Euron in the show) have said that their overall takeaway has been positive, they can’t help but feel that the final season has been a missed opportunity. Asked if he feels his character has been reduced to the sidelines in recent seasons, Hill told Entertainment Weekly, “That’s been my feeling the last couple seasons, that my character became more peripheral, that they concentrated on others more. That’s fine. It’s the nature of a multi-character show. It was kind of frustrating. As a whole, it’s been overwhelmingly positive and brilliant, but I suppose the last couple seasons weren’t my favourite.”

He said he felt Varys was ‘losing his knowledge’ in the last few seasons. “If he was such an intelligent man and he had such resources, how come he didn’t know about things? That added to my dismay. It’s now being rectified with getting a great and noble ending. But that was frustrating for a couple seasons.”

Euron, who dies at the hands of Jaime Lannister in episode five, had killed Daenerys Targaryen’s dragon Rhaegal in the previous episode. Asbaek told IndieWire that fans could have seen another side to Euron. “I wish we could’ve seen — not the seducing side, not the ‘I want to f–k the queen’ side — but something different. Maybe something [darker], more mysterious. It would have been fun to see that side because it’s closer to the books.”

Gwendoline Christie, who plays Brienne in GoT, expressed similar concerns after episode two, in which Brienne was knighted. Christie had said she was so dismayed by showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss’ decision to send Brienne down a romantic road with Jaime, that she had to take a walk after she read it. “I know it’s just a character and I’m an actor who’s lucky to do her job. It’s so heartbreaking. But it’s life isn’t it? Life is heartbreaking. I never assumed they would be together. I didn’t think that would happen. And now I can feel a million hearts breaking,” she told EW.

Christie wasn’t the only one not on the same page with David and Dan (or D&D as they’re now being called online). Lena Headey has said that she wasn’t at all in favour of Cersei Lannister agreeing to sleep with Euron in episode one. “I kept saying, ‘She wouldn’t, she wouldn’t, that she would keep fighting,’ but (David and Dan) obviously know what they’re doing and were adamant Cersei would do what she had to do.”

Headey also told EW that her reaction to Cersei’s final scene ‘was mixed at first’. “I wanted her to have some big piece or fight with somebody,” she said.

Reacting to how her character was killed off, Nathalie Emmanuel, who played Missandei in the show, told EW, “The one thing I would say is I really had wished that I had more time or scenes this season maybe with Daenerys or even with Cersei, scenes where we get to see her being brilliant before she dies.”

Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys, the character who has perhaps witnessed the most drastic change in the final season, told Vanity Fair in an interview that the ending ‘f**cked me up.” She said that “Knowing that is going to be a lasting flavour in someone’s mouth of what Daenerys is…” she couldn’t finish her thought. Episode five confirmed many fans were expecting, and showed Daenerys’ transformation into the Mad Queen.

Jon Snow actor Kit Harington called the season “disappointing” only to backtrack, half-heartedly calling it, “Epic, I dunno.”

Game of Thrones will return for its series finale on Monday, May 20, amid intense fan expectations and scrutiny.

Rishi Kapoor says he won’t return to India for birthday

Published

on

A day after actor Shakti Kapoor said on a comedy show that Rishi Kapoor will return to India in August end, Rishi has reportedly said that he will not be able to be in the country for his birthday on September 4.

A Mumbai Mirror report quoted Rishi as saying, “I have to be here for 11 months, so I will not be back before the end of August. It’s been a difficult time, very taxing, but Neetu (wife), and my children (Ranbir and Riddhima) have been very supportive. I am grateful to everyone. I am waiting to come back and raring to get going. I will plan my return five-six weeks after my last treatment. It is called consolidation or pushback, whereby I will have to undergo chemotherapy to ensure that the ailment does not return. This is the second time I am going through the treatment. I am hoping that I can plan an end-August return but all this talk that I will be back in early September for my birthday, is again nothing but speculation.”

Shakti, who celebrates his birthday just a day before Rishi does, told Hindustan Times, “My and Chintu’s birthday is just a day apart and we have been celebrating together and cut cakes from the times when Raj Kapoor [Rishi’s father] was alive and we would be shooting in Chembur,” says Shakti, sharing his recent conversation with Rishi.

Rishi, 66, who is currently in New York undergoing cancer treatment, told the tabloid in detail that he still has to undergo treatment. “On the subject of my health, thanks to the prayers and good wishes of my family, friends and fans, I am perfect now. The cancer is in remission, but I am still under treatment. I have a crucial meeting with the doctors today at 10.45 am, there’s one treatment still left to be done. The problem is not the treatment but the reaction time. There is a six-week gap between one treatment and the next when all you can do is eat, shop, watch movies, live a normal life which I would rather do at home than here in New York. It’s been nine months and 16 days—I know since I have been counting the days—that I have been away. I really miss home,” he said.

He also talked about getting diagnosed for cancer and said, “When I first came here, everyone was worried for me. The problem was detected when I was shooting in Delhi and was required to dye my hair white. I was told to immediately rush to the Sloan Kettering Hospital. I came here with my hair still dyed white. When word got around that Rishi Kapoor had gone to New York for some kind of medical examination, rumour spread that I was so unwell that my hair had turned white overnight. To counter this, whenever friends of mine came to see me, they posted pictures so people could see what Rishi Kapoor really looked like. Thankfully, my health started improving, week after week, month after month. I had lost 26 kg as I had no appetite for the first four months. Now, I’ve gained seven-eight kg. I don’t want to look too lean, but I haven’t gone back to my original self either. Thank God for that.”

He also talked about how supportive his family has been: “All my siblings, my children and Neetu in particular, who has been like a solid rock, have been around me, supporting me through all this. Right now, my daughter and grand-daughter are with me. Ranbir keeps coming every five-six weeks. I am overjoyed by all the love and concern, the solidarity of my family. Here I have to make a special mention of my niece Natasha and my elder sister Ritu Nanda who is also here for the same reason. They were our anchors who kept Neetu and me going. When your anxiety is so high you need this kind of support and such motivational people around.”

Reacting to reports of him being upset with producers of Jhootha Kahin Ka, a film that released recently and featured Rishi, he said that he is upset that “nonsense is being written”. “In the last 10 months, I have not spoken to anyone from the media, though they have always supported me. I agree with Kangana Ranaut that some people write anything and as a result, serious journalists get drawn into the controversy. When did I say I was upset? I have not been in the country for months. This is not done, it tarnishes the credibility of other journalists who write and report well. Though I do not entirely agree with what Kangana said, on this point anyone can get upset.”

Actor Priyanka Chopra has joined the world in celebrating her sister-in-law and actor Sophie Turner’s first ever Emmy nomination. Sophie was nominated in the Supporting Actress Drama category for her role in HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Priyanka shared two pictures of herself and Sophie on her Instagram Stories, writing, “Congratulations to all the Emmy nominees this year, but especially to…you, @sophiet! We love you and are so incredibly proud of you #JSisters.” Priyanka also gave a special shout-out to Rachel Broshanan of Marvelous Mrs Maisel, Milo Ventimiglia of This Is Us, Viola Davis for How to Get Away With Murder, Jimmy Kimmel for Jimmy Kimmel Live, James Corden for The Late Late Show with James Corden, Laverne Cox for Orange Is the New Black, Netflix’s Queer Eye and Beyonce Knowles Carter for her film Homecoming: A Film By Beyoncé.

Sophie’s singer husband Joe Jonas also congratulated her. “Emmy nominated @sophiet I am so incredibly proud of you,” he wrote with a photo of the two, sharing it on his Instagram stories. Nick Jonas also congratulated her on Instagram.

Sophie is nominated in the Supporting Actress Drama category with three other Game of Thrones co-stars — Gwendoline Christie, Lena Headey and Maisie Williams. The show also led the pack with a record-breaking 32 nominations, the most ever by a drama series in a single year.

Emilia Clarke was nominated in the Lead Actress Drama category while Kit Harington was nominated in Lead Actor Drama category. Actors Alfie Allen, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Peter Dinklage were also nominated for Supporting Actor Drama.

Sophie played Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones for 10 years and eight seasons. The actor was 14 when she started filming the show in 2010. “When you’re starting your career at a young age, you’re forced to grow up much faster. Also, playing a character like Sansa and having to endure all the things she did, toughens you up,” Turner, 23, told Psychologies magazine.

Sophie recently tied the knot with her boyfriend and singer Joe Jonas in France. The wedding was attended by Priyanka and her husband Nick Jonas.
