Delhi Police have arrested a 50-year-old doctor for being part of an illegal organ transplant ring between Bangladesh and India. This doctor, who worked at a private hospital in Delhi, is accused of doing 15-16 transplants over the past few years and has now been suspended.
According to DCP Crime Branch Amit Goel, seven people have been arrested in connection with this international organ transplant racket. The mastermind is a Bangladeshi, with both donors and recipients from Bangladesh.
Russell, who arranged patients and donors, has been arrested along with the doctor, Dr. Vijaya Kumari. She did surgeries at Yatharth Hospital in Noida between 2021 and 2023 and also worked at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in Delhi.
The racket involved bringing Bangladeshi patients to India for organ transplants using fake documents that claimed a relationship between the donors and recipients. These fake documents have been seized.
The Crime Branch discovered that Dr. Kumari was hired on a fee-for-service basis and was not a full-time hospital employee. Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals has suspended her and is cooperating with the investigation.
Yatharth Hospitals said Dr. Kumari was not directly associated with them and they follow strict ethical standards and protocols. They have cooperated fully with the investigation, and no wrongdoing has been found at their hospital.
Other arrested individuals include Russell, his associates from Bangladesh, and a person from Tripura named Ratish Pal, who helped bring donors to Delhi.
