Deepika Padukone on Cannes: You either come here with a film or you slay on the red carpet

Published

on

Any day that includes Pedro Almodovar and Deepika Paudkone has to be a good one. I sat down with Deepika just before a few hours before she left for the airport to return to Mumbai and Chhapaak. Her red carpet style has created quite the stir with Vogue USA and Variety giving it the thumbs up. “You either come here with a film,” she told me, “or you slay on the red carpet.” Or as Variety put it – you go big or you go home. Deepika also added that now that Cannes was done, she was already moving back into the character of Lakshmi, the acid-attack victim she plays in Chhapaak. When I asked her why she doesn’t bring Ranveer here (he seems to be custom-made for red carpets), she said he would be a better fit at the Met Gala. At Cannes, she would top him!

Pain and Glory is Almodovar’s 21st film. This semi-autobiographical film is a rumination on cinema, love, relationships, pain and the merciless passage of time. The wonderful Antonio Banderas plays a filmmaker Salvador Mallo who hasn’t created in a long time. The film moves between personal memories of his childhood and present day, when Salva is battling depression, back pain, a new fondness for heroin and loneliness. Pain and Glory is bittersweet. It’s aching but not hopeless. At one point, I found myself tearing up. It’s also visually stunning with lush colors and fluid transitions between memories, dreams and fantasy.

Another wonderful film I caught is Michael Covino’s The Climb, a buddy comedy like no other you’ve seen before. It begins with two friends bicycling – one is getting married, the other admits to sleeping with his fiancée and there starts a journey that travels over years through weddings, funerals, festivals, children. The Climb has wonderful performances, inventive writing that will make you laugh out loud and dazzling camerawork. In fact, I think a producer should buy the remake rights because, with a little bit of tweaking, it would make for a solid Hindi film!

I also participated in the Rocketman junket today. The film based on the life of Elton John got a standing ovation at Cannes. I spoke with Taron Egerton who plays Elton John, director Dexter Fletcher and actor Bryce Dallas Howard who plays Elton’s mother. After the interview finished, Dexter told me that years ago, he had watched Kal Ho Na Ho in Delhi and loved it. Dexter finished Bohemian Rhapsody and and now has put his singular vision into Rocketman – the song sequences (one has a touch of India) are spectacular!

I’m hoping tomorrow will be warmer – today everyone shuffled around in the cold and the rain. On the red carpet however, the weather was irrelevant. Women dazzled as always. That’s what I call a commitment to duty.

Shahid Kapoor says Mira Rajput brought along many house helps after wedding, but he never gets angry at them like Kabir Singh

Published

on

A scene in the Kabir Singh trailer inspired several memes. In it, Shahid Kapoor’s character, the hot-headed Kabir, chases his maid in the streets after she breaks a glass, presumably not on purpose. In an appearance on The Kapil Sharma Show, where Shahid and his co-actor Kiara Advani promoted the upcoming film, Shahid was asked if he’s ever lost his cool on domestic helps in real life.

According to Mumbai Mirror, Shahid said that his wife, Mira Rajput, brought along several house helps to their home after their wedding, and were he to break a glass, he would apologise to them and offer to clean up.

The actor has spoken about channelling a dark side of his psyche for the film, in which he plays a self-destructive alcoholic. In the past, Shahid has said that he would take long showers before returning home, to wash away the smell of the 20-odd cigarettes he was smoking on set. Shahid, on Kapil’s show, said that another reason for those long showers was to metaphorically ‘cleanse himself of all the anger and angst’ he was carrying on set.

“I don’t endorse smoking at all. However, the role required it, as the protagonist uses it to channel his angst and rage. It wasn’t easy, and it came to a point where I smoked almost 20 cigarettes a day. It would take me close to two hours to shower and get rid of the smells before I could return home to my children,” he had said in an earlier interview to Mumbai Mirror.

Kabir Singh is the Hindi remake of hit Telugu film Arjun Reddy, which starred Vijay Deverakonda in the lead role. Also directed by Sandeep Vanga, Kabir Singh is slated for release on June 21.

New James Bond film’s set rocked by an explosion, one crew member injured

Published

An explosion at Britain’s Pinewood Studios on Tuesday rocked the set of the next James Bond film, causing damage to the stage and one minor injury. The Sun newspaper said a triple blast hit the set after a stunt went wrong, taking off part of the roof and several wall panels.

One member of staff was crushed by debris falling down on him as he stood outside the studios, west of London, the tabloid said. The official James Bond account on Twitter said: “During the filming of a controlled explosion on the set of Bond 25 today at Pinewood Studios, damage was caused to the exterior of the 007 Stage.“There were no injuries on set, however one crew member outside the stage has sustained a minor injury.”

The Sun quoted a source as saying: “It was utter chaos. “There were three huge explosions and it’s blown part of the Bond stage roof off. A fireball was supposed to go through the set. That was the stunt but something has gone horribly wrong. The place is now on total lockdown.”

The film has been besieged by problems. Bond actor Daniel Craig had to undergo minor ankle surgery after an injury on set.Craig — who will play the legendary British super spy for the fifth time in the as-yet untitled film — sustained the injury during filming in Jamaica.

Oscar winner Rami Malek will play the villain in the long-awaited movie that is set to see Craig bow out after eight years as 007. The 25th edition of one of the world’s most enduring franchises will also see the return of Ralph Fiennes as Bond’s boss and French actor Lea Seydoux.

The production has been repeatedly delayed over script disputes. The delays were prompted in part by Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle’s replacement by Cary Fukunaga in September. The film is now due to open in cinemas in the United States, Britain and France on April 8, 2020.
