Deepika Padukone on Cannes: You either come here with a film or you slay on the red carpet

Published

on

Any day that includes Pedro Almodovar and Deepika Paudkone has to be a good one. I sat down with Deepika just before a few hours before she left for the airport to return to Mumbai and Chhapaak. Her red carpet style has created quite the stir with Vogue USA and Variety giving it the thumbs up. “You either come here with a film,” she told me, “or you slay on the red carpet.” Or as Variety put it – you go big or you go home. Deepika also added that now that Cannes was done, she was already moving back into the character of Lakshmi, the acid-attack victim she plays in Chhapaak. When I asked her why she doesn’t bring Ranveer here (he seems to be custom-made for red carpets), she said he would be a better fit at the Met Gala. At Cannes, she would top him!

Pain and Glory is Almodovar’s 21st film. This semi-autobiographical film is a rumination on cinema, love, relationships, pain and the merciless passage of time. The wonderful Antonio Banderas plays a filmmaker Salvador Mallo who hasn’t created in a long time. The film moves between personal memories of his childhood and present day, when Salva is battling depression, back pain, a new fondness for heroin and loneliness. Pain and Glory is bittersweet. It’s aching but not hopeless. At one point, I found myself tearing up. It’s also visually stunning with lush colors and fluid transitions between memories, dreams and fantasy.

Another wonderful film I caught is Michael Covino’s The Climb, a buddy comedy like no other you’ve seen before. It begins with two friends bicycling – one is getting married, the other admits to sleeping with his fiancée and there starts a journey that travels over years through weddings, funerals, festivals, children. The Climb has wonderful performances, inventive writing that will make you laugh out loud and dazzling camerawork. In fact, I think a producer should buy the remake rights because, with a little bit of tweaking, it would make for a solid Hindi film!

I also participated in the Rocketman junket today. The film based on the life of Elton John got a standing ovation at Cannes. I spoke with Taron Egerton who plays Elton John, director Dexter Fletcher and actor Bryce Dallas Howard who plays Elton’s mother. After the interview finished, Dexter told me that years ago, he had watched Kal Ho Na Ho in Delhi and loved it. Dexter finished Bohemian Rhapsody and and now has put his singular vision into Rocketman – the song sequences (one has a touch of India) are spectacular!

I’m hoping tomorrow will be warmer – today everyone shuffled around in the cold and the rain. On the red carpet however, the weather was irrelevant. Women dazzled as always. That’s what I call a commitment to duty.

Among those who are a fan of the picture was her husband Virat. Reacting to it, Virat left red-heart and heart eyes emojis in the comments section. There were many fans too, who left appreciative notes. One said “hello sunshine” while another wrote “nice picture”.

Anushka has earlier shared a number of pictures from a shoot she had done for Filmfare magazine. Needless to say, she looked stunning in them, be it in western outfits or a saree.

Anushka’s last release was Zero, which failed to impress at the box office. She played a woman named Aafia Yusufzai Bhinder, a wheelchair-bound NASA scientist with cerebral palsy. While the film received mixed reviews from critics, Virat was gaga over his wife’s performance. He had taken to Twitter in December last year and wrote: “Saw @Zero21Dec and loved the entertainment it brought. I enjoyed myself. Everyone played their parts well. Loved @AnushkaSharma performance because I felt it was a very challenging role and she was outstanding.”

While she hasn’t signed any new films, her production company would be producing a series for Netflix. On being asked about her future plans, Anushka had told Hindustan Times in the past, “The best situation for me to be in — as an actor as well as the audience — would be to watch a film which is entertaining but it must also leave some thoughts — in a very subtle manner — in your mind to ponder over.”

Karan Johar on drug party accusation: ‘Vicky Kaushal was recovering from dengue, my mother was sitting with us’

Published

on

Weeks after a politician accused Karan Johar of hosting a drug-fuelled party that was attended by Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, Shahid Kapoor and Varun Dhawan, among other Bollywood personalities, the filmmaker has dismissed the conspiracy theory as “baseless”.

SAD MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa had claimed that a video shared by Karan from the party was a proof that drugs were used there. He had even requested the police to take cognizance; none of the celebrities have reacted to claims till now.

Talking to journalist Rajeev Masand, Karan asked if he would have shared a video if drugs were indeed used. “There were achieving members of the industry who were having an easy night out after a hard week of work, having a good time. I took that video with all the earnestness… would I be putting out that video if there was anything happening at all, I am not stupid,” he said in the interview.

Discussing how the reflection of a light near Vicky Kaushal was misconstrued as proof, he added, “Apparently you are not allowed to scratch your nose. Apparently, you are not allowed to put your phone in your back pocket. Apparently, a shadow of light is perceived to be some kind of powder.”

He went on to explain that Vicky was actually recovering from dengue and drinking hot water with lemon. Karan said that it was just a party where friends letting their hair down over some wine. “My mother, 5 minutes before this video, was sitting with us. It was that kind of a family, happy, social gathering, where friends were sitting and having a good time and we were listening to some music, having some good food and having good conversational energy there. There was nothing else going on,” he said.

While he accepted that he wondered whether he should react to the accusations, he eventually decided not to. “I don’t react very well to these baseless accusations because that’s what they were, baseless,” he said, while accepting that he will take a more ruthless course next time, “I told them also… I am not taking this very kindly, the next time where baseless accusations, I will take the legal route. You cannot mar our solid reputations, our sincere reputations our committed reputations just because you are presuming something. You cannot put out a baseless accusation that has no base, no fact, no truth, no reality and try and mar us and our reputations, it’s ridiculous.”
