Anil Kapoor on wife Sunita’s refusal to pose for a magazine cover: I almost fell at her feet ki ‘photo lele yaar’

Published

Married for 35 years, and dating for 10 years before that… actor Anil Kapoor completed 45 years of togetherness with wife, Sunita Kapoor, today. Here’s Anil in a freewheeling and exclusive conversation, recalling and revealing tidbits about his love story.

What’s the story behind your marriage?

I fell in love with her voice first. I thought ‘oh God, what a beautiful voice yaar, kya English bolti hai, pronunciation is so well’. I met her for the first time at Raj Kapoor’s house. She was so attractive, and if I may say, sexy also… she wore these gogo glasses, which are big, round and rimmed. Then we started chatting on phone, and our friendship grew. First it was a very platonic friendship, which developed into love. I started missing her when she wasn’t around. I had to speak to her, I felt a vacuum. I would travel by buses to meet her.

What was that point which made you take the plunge?

When I felt that I will be able to financially support her. She had made it clear ‘I won’t go in the kitchen, I am not going to cook for you’. I never expected her to cook for me. I thought I should have a lot of servants, and a good chef in my house. I am a Punjabi, I am fond of food. Also, another point was that when I felt I can have a home. All my life, I was happy, we lived in a rented home. When I was a kid, my family stayed in a small little place. Then one room, and then two bedroom hall. But all of them were rented, we could never afford to buy it. I needed a chef, a cook, and then I proposed to her and we got married.

A notion attached to Bollywood was that young actors were dissuaded from getting married. Did that happen with you too?

I was dissuaded, (people said) it was hara-kiri for me to get married. I came to a situation where I was at crossroads — career or love. I had started getting work, but everyone said ‘you are doing well, and your career has just started. You are climbing the ladder of success, and now that you are getting married, you are going to come down.’ I had to make a choice — either come down, or get married. I said I don’t mind coming down, but I will not sacrifice… she’s more important for me. It’s a fact, I am not faking it.

So while you were busy working in films, she decided to stay at home and take care of your children, Sonam, Rhea and Harsh Varrdhan…

She was not one of those wives, she was always working. When we were not dating each other, she was a model. A banker’s daughter, she always supported herself, and never took money from her parents. That’s one of the things I respected a lot. She said ‘When I am going to get married, I will come in just this one outfit. There will not be one single ornament or jewellery, just one salwar kameez or sari, that’s it. Rest we will build ourselves.’

She’s quite media shy. She didn’t give us even one quote for this interview!

She’s not media shy, she just doesn’t speak to the media. She wants to lead a normal life. I respect her decision, but sometimes, that went against me. I also wanted to project myself in front of the public, have a few (magazine) covers done (that said) ‘HAPPY FAMILY’ ‘ANIL KAPOOR’S WIFE’. Maine badi koshish ki ‘I am getting this cover, that cover’, almost fell at her feet ki ‘photo lele yaar’. What to do?

Shahid Kapoor says Mira Rajput brought along many house helps after wedding, but he never gets angry at them like Kabir Singh

Published

on

A scene in the Kabir Singh trailer inspired several memes. In it, Shahid Kapoor’s character, the hot-headed Kabir, chases his maid in the streets after she breaks a glass, presumably not on purpose. In an appearance on The Kapil Sharma Show, where Shahid and his co-actor Kiara Advani promoted the upcoming film, Shahid was asked if he’s ever lost his cool on domestic helps in real life.

According to Mumbai Mirror, Shahid said that his wife, Mira Rajput, brought along several house helps to their home after their wedding, and were he to break a glass, he would apologise to them and offer to clean up.

The actor has spoken about channelling a dark side of his psyche for the film, in which he plays a self-destructive alcoholic. In the past, Shahid has said that he would take long showers before returning home, to wash away the smell of the 20-odd cigarettes he was smoking on set. Shahid, on Kapil’s show, said that another reason for those long showers was to metaphorically ‘cleanse himself of all the anger and angst’ he was carrying on set.

“I don’t endorse smoking at all. However, the role required it, as the protagonist uses it to channel his angst and rage. It wasn’t easy, and it came to a point where I smoked almost 20 cigarettes a day. It would take me close to two hours to shower and get rid of the smells before I could return home to my children,” he had said in an earlier interview to Mumbai Mirror.

Kabir Singh is the Hindi remake of hit Telugu film Arjun Reddy, which starred Vijay Deverakonda in the lead role. Also directed by Sandeep Vanga, Kabir Singh is slated for release on June 21.

New James Bond film’s set rocked by an explosion, one crew member injured

Published

An explosion at Britain’s Pinewood Studios on Tuesday rocked the set of the next James Bond film, causing damage to the stage and one minor injury. The Sun newspaper said a triple blast hit the set after a stunt went wrong, taking off part of the roof and several wall panels.

One member of staff was crushed by debris falling down on him as he stood outside the studios, west of London, the tabloid said. The official James Bond account on Twitter said: “During the filming of a controlled explosion on the set of Bond 25 today at Pinewood Studios, damage was caused to the exterior of the 007 Stage.“There were no injuries on set, however one crew member outside the stage has sustained a minor injury.”

The Sun quoted a source as saying: “It was utter chaos. “There were three huge explosions and it’s blown part of the Bond stage roof off. A fireball was supposed to go through the set. That was the stunt but something has gone horribly wrong. The place is now on total lockdown.”

The film has been besieged by problems. Bond actor Daniel Craig had to undergo minor ankle surgery after an injury on set.Craig — who will play the legendary British super spy for the fifth time in the as-yet untitled film — sustained the injury during filming in Jamaica.

Oscar winner Rami Malek will play the villain in the long-awaited movie that is set to see Craig bow out after eight years as 007. The 25th edition of one of the world’s most enduring franchises will also see the return of Ralph Fiennes as Bond’s boss and French actor Lea Seydoux.

The production has been repeatedly delayed over script disputes. The delays were prompted in part by Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle’s replacement by Cary Fukunaga in September. The film is now due to open in cinemas in the United States, Britain and France on April 8, 2020.
